Olympic Run Up
Published by Melanie Nocher
My first chance to qualify this year didn't go particularly how I wanted it to go as the obvious outcome was I didn't hit my time. I've had a few competitions and at Irish trails I swam a new Irish senior record which I was happy about but the swim was too forced I went out wanting it too much and paid the price in the last 20m. I have consistently swam personal bests been on my times but I still have a fingertip to go. I went straight from Irish trails to British trails which was great as I got to swim in the Olympic pool and get to grips with the venue and surrounding area which will be a good advantage if I manage to qualify.
Looking back over the past few months have been a bit of a blur with everything being quite disjointed. I have been very emotional over some disappointing results yet numb over others. I've been through periods of thinking what’s the point and periods where I want to find the nearest pool and race. With all these mixed emotions has come some problems for me the pressure of the London 2012 Olympics has got to me in some competitions and id be lying if I said it hadn't.
Its hard to describe the feeling of knowing so many people want you to do well and yet there's so many people I am scared of possibly feeling like I've let down at the same time.
Having a “home” Olympics has brought with it both positives and negatives there is a lot more focus on this Olympics that I have noticed from Beijing and the longer qualifying goes on the more difficult it becomes.
I have one of my last chances to qualify in a few weeks and I'm hoping that this will be the one were my time is cemented. I'm trying to stay positive and keep the pressure off however with heightened media and time ticking away I have been finding this increasingly difficult. The Olympics represents so much and its difficult to describe what its like to be a part of. The main thing I know is I want to be there again so here’s to hoping everything goes to plan and my next blog will be able to start with I've done it.
Hope everyone is getting excited about the games and keeping well :)
